“The answer is out there,” we think. “I just haven’t found the right plan for my circumstances yet.”

This is where the scriptures differ from textbooks and self-help literature. The Bible doesn’t claim to be an answer book; it does, however, self-identify as a wisdom book. And wisdom is different than knowledge.

Proverbs 9:10 says this “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” The baseline for any crisis, any struggle and problem then, is this question: “Who is God?”

And here are some follow up questions: “What is God like? What does God desire? How does the character of God inform this situation?” Rather than asking “What’s the plot line?” or “What’s my next move?” maybe the question is “Who are the players in this unfolding drama?” and “If God, is directing (with mercy, kindness, courage and justice) what does He command, suggest or require?”
